'Northumbria Police Force' seem to be paranoid about 'us' listening to their transmissions. So much so that they have spent what was reported to be hundreds of thousands on an encryption method called MASC.
This is a very secure system manufactured by Marconi Secure Systems which is integrated into the Motorola Handsets that most officers carry. This stops 'US' from hearing, or should I say understanding, these police communications. We can still tune our scanner into our local police station however what we will hear will be a jumbled squeeky noise that is actually very hard to describe. Don't despair though because the police often switch this encryption off as it is much more liable to RF (radio frequency) interference in bad weather etc. When it is switched off, we can then hear clearly what is being said. This encryption is used only on the UHF frequencies, 400-453Mhz. North of the Tyne, Northumbria Police Officers use Motorola HT600E radios. South of the Tyne officers are issued with newer Kenwood radios.
Below are the frequencies for Northumberland & Tyne and Wear.

While scanning these frequencies especially south of the Tyne ( Sunderland area ) please let me know if you find that some channels are incorrect. Although I can guarentee you that there is activity on these channels I cant be sure that I have the correct location on my site as i travel south of the Tyne very infrequently.
