The VHF Police communication system in Northumbria & Tyne and Wear operates on 5 channels:

Ch 1, Ch 2, Ch 3, Ch 4 and (not surprisingly) Ch 5.

The system is duplex.  The base frequencies can be found on the 152Mhz band and the mobiles (vehicles) on 143Mhz.  This is an offset of 9.0 Mhz.  The 152Mhz base frequencies can be heard all over the county as the transmissions are transmitted from well situated Ariels e.g the top of a hill.

However the mobiles have a maximum transmission distance of approx. 7 miles and in built up areas they can only send for 1 or 2 miles.  So while you are listening you may not be able to the mobile when you switch frequency.  The police experience the same problem.  They overcome this by using repeaters, the mobiles transmit to one of these repeaters and that beams the signal off across a wider distance.  Each channel has a couple of these repeater frequencies, they are found between 146-148Mhz for the BASE, and 152-155.9875 Mhz for the MOBILES.

This may seem like a neat, clever system however when two mobiles want to talk to each other they have to go through LB (the control room) and ask for talkthrough as the system is duplex and not simplex.  This explains why you may be hearing both sides of the transmissions on the 152Mhz band.  It is not unusual to hear both sides of the transmissions as during car chases, and major incidents the talkthrough system is switched on so that all of the officers can keep up to date and easily communicate.

As you can see from the table there are a few frequencies that i am not to sure about.  I would appreicate any sort of response via e-mail to what they may be.  I know that they are obviously Newcastle / Northumberland area but i would like to be more precise.

As usual if there is anything you would like to add or feedback etc.  Please e-mail.
